Acoustic Mighty Oaks @ Volksbühne in Berlin
Living in Berlin is spending 6 months wondering why the hell you choose to live in this city, to realize with the first day of sun and heat that indeed, it is still the most amazing city you could have chosen. And with the sun, Berliners occupy the streets. To see them standing in the middle of the sidewalks, head towards the sun and with eyes closed is a scene that remains etched in the memory of all who pass through this city.
“Sun lizards”. Said in jest but quite rightly though, that is how the Berlin trio (of adoption) Mighty Oaks confessed they call Berliners that are staring at the sun. It happened during their concert on Monday the fourth of February, in the middle of the dark and icy Winter of Berlin.
I had already seen Mighty Oaks at some festival, but the opportunity to see them on acoustic, made Monday night feel even more appealing. Summoned in Volksbühne, an imposing and dark theater of 1914 located in the Rosa Luxemburg Square, the concert promised and certainly did not disappoint. The 800 attendees, we were privileged witnesses of a unique show, like those that got so popular in the 90s (Mtv Unplugged) and left performances for posterity (Nirvana, Eric Clapton, Pearl Jam, etc...) where the songs were taken to the essence that they were born with.
The night passed between new and old melodies and reached the climax (as could not have been otherwise) when they played “Brother”, the hit that catapulted them to fame back in 2014. And everything happened interspersed by the words of an excited Ian Hooper. It was a great show and we all left knowing that it had been a night to boast about having been there.
Ian (USA), Claudio (Italy) and Craig (UK) - and of course to their Manager too for believing in the success of a gig under this format -, thanks for the night!
