Leoniden @ Docks in Hamburg
Last Thursday Leoniden were returning once again to the largest and most important musical event in Hamburg, the Reeperbahn festival to play on its second day. It's been a while since this young band from Kiel took Germany by storm. They play a wild indie-rock-dance-funk mix that bursts the seams of all musical boundaries and combine punk and grunge influences with elements of soul and funk, resulting in catchy pop songs that equate to straight up hits. And they make every concert a party. So last Thursday was certainly not an exception.
The band started as a school band with the brothers Lennart (guitar) and Felix Eicke (drums) and Djamin Izadi (synthesizer) and JP Neumann (bass), at that time still under the name "Leonid Cabaret". Jakob Amr (vocals) joined the band in 2015, who moved to Kiel especially for the band and had been previously the guitarist and singer of the band Zinnschauer.
Whoever happened to be at Docks on Thursday 19th to see them for the first time, surely ended up happy after a pleasant surprise. Good music, good vibes, simply nothing to reproach Leoniden. With the promise of killing it every single night, since they released their second album in 2018 these 5 guys have sold out almost every live show they’ve played and there is a reason for it!
Lennart is a show himself. It takes only one song to get him already soaked in sweat. Charismatic and electric, from the first chord he begins his particular show with a bunch of dances and guitar moves that undoubtedly delight people and anyone with a camera in the room. You lose track of the amount of tuned Telecasters that he has to be given by his crew. Pure fire on stage!
But Lennart's show is always perfectly accompanied by a band members that never stop pushing led by a great Jakob who as a frontman always gives everything he has. As proof of this, he always jumps onto the audience with his percussion instrument, which he does not stop playing while crowd surfing among an enthusiastic and supportive audience.
Leoniden have a powerful live, based on attitude and good manners, and many many concerts behind them. An impeccable show built thanks to a simple but effective combination of guitars, rhythms and good melodies, proving that sometimes it is not necessary to get musically too complicated to touch people. As an evidence, the large number of hits they already have despite their still short trajectory.
