Lolla goes to India!
Thirty years years after Ted Gardner, Don Muller, Marc Geiger and Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction) who, inspired by Britain's Reading Festival, conceived what today is one of the most known and successful festival brands, Lollapalooza has just announced a new edition in Mumbai. After that first edition of the festival in Chicago, the cities of Santiago de Chile, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Berlin, Paris and Stockholm have been added over the years. India will thus become the first edition of the festival in the Asian market and, according to the announcement, it will have a mostly international line-up, although it will also include 40% local talent. It will take place on January 28th and 29th, 2023.
And since we are talking about the festival, have you ever wondered where the name comes from or what it means? In case you did, here goes a curiosity! According to the etymology the noun Lollapalooza means “an extraordinary or unusual thing, person, or event; an exceptional example or instance” and the first record of this funny word is from 1896. The term was a discovery by Farrell who heard the word while seeing a Three Stooges film and immediately fell in love with it and its double meaning. In addition to that, in time the term also came to refer to a large lollipop and if we pay attention, we can see a character holding a lollipop in the festival’s original logo as well as in every edition's graphic imaginary.
