Lapee, a female loo to improve gender equality

Every time there are more and more festivals committing to doing lineups with a 50/50 gender equality. Okay, that's awesome but what about the simple and natural act of peeing? It's no wonder that when it comes to taking a leak in a festival it's simply much worse for females. With no time between concert and concert and usually with a group of friends already  difficult to keep together, there are many times when I felt sorry for the unequal queues in the loos. That is exactly what Gina and Alexander, two architects who graduated from Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen in 2017, experienced working for the Roskilde festival as volunteers and what led into designing Lapee, a female urinal to improve womxn safety and gender equality.

According to Gina and Alexander research, 90% of toilet queues are women who just need to pee. Moreover, the two founders claim that Lapee takes only 30 seconds to use, compared to over two minutes for a conventional portable toilet because its own design encourages to hurry up. It has no doors, but it allows you to see and not to be seen. It has already been used in different cities across the world and in several music festivals including Roskilde, who installed 48 units last year.

What does Lapee even mean?

It means the piss in French, cool right? ;-)

I love it! How can I get it?

It depends who you are. If you are a toilet rental company you can contact them to buy as many units as you need. If you are a festival they can put you in contact with their partners across the world to rent your Lapee units. If you are an individual, follow Lapee on instagram to support the movement and demand more Lapees around the world. They can also easily send you a small Lapee in a 1:40 scale or some stickers to decorate your room. You can also give them as a gift to your girlfriends that need to pee all the time.

How many times can be used?

It depends. If it is connected to a 1100L capacity tank Lapee is able to hold 3500 uses, and it needs to be emptied before it can be used again. If it is connected directly to sewage Lapee offers unlimited uses. So cool!

Why is the upper body exposed?

Paper is designed so you are not seen but you are still able to look out. No need to feel scared behind a closed door.
